James Surls is a distinguished sculptor who works with bronze, steel, and wood in large scale. The artist turns to his mind's eye to visualize the universe and express his freedom from the physical. Surls' work focuses on scale. Many of his sculptures are larger then the viewer and span lengths of 10' or more.
The design I created embraced the scale of his artwork . Large, bold typography is paired with simple icons and a traditional serif font to mimic the dominate and delicate nature of Surls’ artwork. Elements of the sculptures intertwine and break the bounds of the page and text. Each oversized page layout was meticulously designed to cross the divide between page layout and art.
